Review ArticleHSS Research Fellowship
Hospital for Special Surgery — Research Fellowship
Dr. Morgan completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City — one of the leading musculoskeletal research institutions in the world — in collaboration with the orthopedic research laboratory at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. His work focused on cartilage biomarkers, synovial fluid proteomics, and intra-articular therapies in canine elbow dysplasia models. This fellowship directly informed several of his peer-reviewed publications and established methodologies later applied in clinical trials at VERG Brooklyn.
Research Focus
- Cartilage degradation biomarkers in elbow dysplasia
- Synovial fluid proteomics and inflammatory mediators
- Intra-articular hyaluronan therapy
- Comparative musculoskeletal modeling
Collaborating Institutions
- Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY
- Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
- VERG Brooklyn Department of Surgery

Wet Labs & Hands-On CE
Dr. Morgan instructs hands-on wet labs at national veterinary meetings and continuing education programs. These sessions are designed for general practitioners and surgical residents seeking to refine technical skills in a structured laboratory environment.
TPLO Surgical Technique
Cadaveric wet lab covering tibial plateau angle measurement, saw technique, implant placement, and closure. Offered annually at ACVS Summit.
Elbow Arthroscopy
Joint scope orientation, probe technique, coronoid fragment removal, and scope-guided flushing. Wet lab format with cadaveric specimens.
Thoracic Surgery Fundamentals
Intercostal thoracotomy, lung lobectomy technique, thoracostomy tube placement, and chest closure. For referring veterinarians and surgical residents.
Hemilaminectomy & Spinal Approach
Cadaveric dissection covering spinal anatomy, hemilaminectomy technique, disc material removal, and dural handling for thoracolumbar IVDD.
Laparoscopic Surgery Introduction
Box trainer exercises and cadaveric tissue work covering port placement, instrument triangulation, and basic laparoscopic techniques for general practitioners.
Fracture Fixation Principles
Practical session on long-bone fracture classification, plate and screw selection, and application principles using synthetic bone models and cadaveric specimens.
Institutional Teaching
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
Visiting clinical instructor for the small animal surgery rotation. Contributes to the fourth-year clinical program in orthopedic and soft tissue procedures. Participates in case-based learning rounds with clinical students and interns.
VERG Brooklyn Surgical Residency Program
Supervises surgical interns and residents at VERG Brooklyn. Leads weekly case rounds, procedure-specific teaching, and evaluates resident progress through direct observation. Mentors trainees in surgical decision-making and client communication.
U.S. Army Veterinary Corps — Deployed Training
During CENTCOM deployment, provided surgical training and case guidance to allied partner-force veterinary personnel working with military working dogs. Conducted in-theater case reviews and procedural training adapted to austere field settings.
Continuing Education for Referring DVMs
Regular luncheon and evening CE lectures for referring veterinarians covering surgical referral indications, pre-referral imaging, case selection, and communication between general practice and surgical specialty teams.
Speaking or Wet Lab Invitations
Dr. Morgan accepts a limited number of speaking and wet lab invitations each year at national meetings and continuing education programs. Requests from program directors, specialty colleges, and veterinary schools may be directed to [email protected]. Topic areas covered include orthopedic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, thoracic surgery, spinal surgery, perioperative pain management, and surgical decision-making.
