If your pet is having a medical emergency, do not wait — call (718) 522-9400 or go to your nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

Surgery Day Checklist

A quick-reference checklist to keep handy around your pet's surgery date.

Before Surgery

  • No food after midnight the night before (water OK until 6am)
  • Confirm medication instructions with the surgical team
  • Bathe pet day before (not day of) surgery
  • Bring all current medications to drop-off
  • Have a reachable phone number available all day
  • Prepare a quiet, comfortable recovery space at home

After Surgery

  • Keep E-collar on at all times unless directly supervising
  • Give all medications as prescribed — finish the full course
  • Check incision twice daily for swelling, redness, or discharge
  • No running, jumping, or off-leash activity without clearance
  • Keep incision dry — no baths or swimming until sutures are out
  • Return for suture removal at 10–14 days post-op
